Selena I can do anything

Selena

On October 6th, 2007 Selena and her Mother, Carol were enjoying Thanks Giving dinner with some friends. Selena was having a ball with Sal. Suddenly she started to cry and said that her shoulder was hurting her. Her Mother thought she was tired and took her aside to calm down. A minute later, Selena was at the top of the staircase and her right side was totally limp. When her Mother asked what was wrong, only a gargle came out of Selena's mouth. Carol, knew right then and there something was major wrong. She screamed out to call 911, a few minutes later they were whisked to St. Joseph Brant Hospital and an hour later to McMaster Children's Hospital.

Selena suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, which means bleeding occurs in the brain and damages the surrounding tissue. This was on the left side which affects the right side of her body and brain. She was in a coma for 5 days and in ICU for 10. On day 3, Selena had her flap removed which is part of her skull to ensure that the swelling would not be damaging to her brain. It was put back on several weeks later. She now has a scar form the back of her ear to the front of her forehead. Selena had spent 6.5 weeks in the hospital. She had to relearn how to walk and talk. On November 20th she went to Bloorview Kids Rehab where she spent another 5 months there to relearn everything. Selena went back to school part time on April 28th.

Selena's personality that is vibrant, fun and funny was never altered. She is still very talented in singing and dancing. Her short term memory has come back. She has assistance in school with a resource teacher and EA. Her right side leg is doing much better, but she still walks with a limp. Here right arm and hand are at 60% recovery. She strives for it to be at 110%. She just wants to have fun!
